Another Kefalonian Butterfly

Post by web4160 »

Can anyone identify this butterfly. Apologies for the poor quality of the photograph but it was sat at the top of a tree and I've heavily cropped it. To give an idea of the size it was significantly bigger than a Southern White Admiral which was also in the same tree.

With some confidence, but not 100%, I would say Hipparchia syriaca. All the features visible in these pictures support this diagnosis (syriaca, as opposed to fagi) but some details (the venation of the hindwing is useful for separating the two) are not visible.

Thanks Guy, and for the previous identification of the Skippers.
