Call of the wild.. anyone else had similar?

Post by Dave McCormick »

Last night I went into my garden after being online. It was a hot and humid night. There is a large hedge that runs along the boarder between our house and neighbours with a small fence and honeysuckle bush near our window. (I'll post a pic of area when I get one soon)

Now on corner of hedge beside end of fence where hedge starts and where honeysucke is (smells strong) a whole swarm of various moths appeared. And I mean loads. I live on a farm beside 2 decidious forests and field/meadows. Anyway, I saw Large Yellow Underwings, Dun-bars, Small Magpies, many various micros and silver-y moths flying about, must have been over 100+ moths or more about. Then the bats came. There was only a few bats, but after 15mins or so all moths and bats had vanished. There was a few other moths around, small magpies, marbled beautys and micros and flies/midges too. Also some green lacewings, craneflies and beetles around. Call of the wild in my garden last night!

Pitty my moth trap was not complete or who knows what I would have found out there.

Dunno how to explain that, never happened before as far as I am aware. Anyone else experienced that or anything like it?

On and here is one of the small magpie moth I found on a jar lid when I got out of bed. It was in my garden. Always liked them because of their shape and colours:
