Small Tortoiseshell 1st Brood (was often in June)

Post by PhilBJohnson »

On June 1st 2021, BBC Springwatch presenters wanted pictures of Small Tortoiseshell butterflies to be sent to them, but did not express why? It was thought that they were seen sooner in the south of England, with averagely warmer temperatures, than in the Midlands.
In Lincolnshire (near Lincoln) on June 2nd some wild caterpillars were not quite ready to pupate. Near this moment in time, where populations were strong, it was thought, it was still possible to see, the last of the over-wintered butterflies, usually worn winged females, which had not spent themselves fighting, like some of the territorial males.
2nd June 2021, Small Tortoiseshell larvae, near Lincoln, "with star potential".
