Wasp id please.

Post by Allan.W. »

I wonder if anyone knows what this little Wasp type insect might be please ,it had a iridescent red coloured mid section ,and I thought at first ,possibly a Ruby -Tailed Wasp species ,but looking again I,m not so sure ! it was on chalk scrub ,right beside the sea at Samphire Ho,
near Dover ,around mid July (………… I think ) and was around 12-15 mm long.
Thanks for looking ! Regards Allan.W.

Looks very like the sawfly Macrophya annulata, as illustrated in Paul Brock's Comprehensive Guide to the Insects of Britain and Ireland.
