Something else to focus in on

Post by Dave McCormick »

I got bored today and decided to see what else was out there to focus my camera on. Here are a few shots I got with my canon 400D. Anyone knows what some of these are, that might help

Tiny bug on a holly leaf:

Image

Sigma 105mm
f/4
ISO-400
Exposure = 1/60sec
Metering mode = Pattern
Flash On

Woodlouse

Image

Sigma 105mm
f/3.5
ISO-200
Exposure = 1/60sec
Exposure Bias = -0.5 step
Metering Mode = Average
Flash On

Horsefly Mating (found this a little tricky to focus in on):

Image
Sigma 105mm
f/2.8
ISO-200
Exposure = 1/200sec
Exposure Bias = -0.5 step
Metering Mode = Average
Flash On

I have a few more, just need to find them
Cheers all,

Hi Dave,

The fly is a Scatophagid, probably Scatophaga stercoraria. What a beauty.

The fly there, I took many pics of it and only 3 came out at all. It was tough to focus in on as either the back of it blurred, front blurred or fly on bottom blurred.

Try moving a little further away Dave (more depth of field), and then crop in later. :wink: Woodlouse was very good, what's the other critter with it :!:

Thats an idea, I am just learning all this while I have chance. And I don't really know what the other critter beside the woodlouse is.

When you say, 'the fly', don't you mean 'the flies'? Surely you've managed to catch an intimate moment there, Dave! One of those seasonally inappropriate behaviours we're hearing all about...

Oh, and 'scatophagid' is Greek for 'poo eater'. :)

For what it's worth I second Steve's identification, and what beauties they are!

I can't wait until oil beetle time in this country, they're a proper sign of Spring for me.

Felix.
Ps: Another great pic Martin.

stercora is the latin word for poopies... so the scatophagus stercoraria is a hybrid of greek & latin plop

I think we've successfully established that the poor little chap has a most unenviable name! :)

Hey Martin, nice pic. Sure I don't mind, anyone has anything like this to post, do it here.

Ok a few more pics I took reciently:

Moorhen in Water:

Image

Sigma 105mm
f/5.6
Exposure = 1/500sec
Exposure Bisa = 0 Step
ISO-200
Metering = Average
Flash Off

Another Moorhen:

Image

Sigma 105mm
f/4
Exposure = 1/125sec
Exposure Bisa = +1 Step
ISO-200
Metering = Average
Flash Off

when I was watching moorhens and things, I saw many treecreepers around, but the only pic i got was one that made it look like a mouse somehow.

Got this one today, what type of ladybird is this?

Image

Sigma 105mm
f/4
Exposure = 1/60sec
Exposure Bisa = 0 Step
ISO-400
Metering = Pattern
Flash On

Dave,

If you reduce the aperture then you will increase the dof. Try for something like f8 - f10. You can afford to reduce your shutter speed to compensate.

Peter
Kind regards
