Purple Hairstreak
Purple Hairstreak
I have only ever seen one of thee before . I believe they habit the tops of Oak trees
Re: Purple Hairstreak
You are right, Chocky. Purple Hairstreaks are usually canopy butterflies and it is rare to see them at ground level.
Given their lack of interest in visiting plants to take nectar, this makes them difficult subjects to get close to and photograph.
Any clear image of a Purple Hairstreak is precious, and even more so if it is holding its wings open.
You appear to have got a bit of both so well done!

Thank you so much for you kind comment David
I was sitting almost under a huge Oak tree wondering if the was a colony at the top when this one fluttered down.
I was so amazed I took about 60 photos mostly the same though
