Mystery Clouded Yellow!

Post by felix123 »

Hello all,

Went on a walk to Powerstock Common (Dorset) with my Dad today, and had a lovely walk with tonnes of Small tortoiseshells, common blues and speckled woods. Also with two lovely but tatty Silver-washed fritillaries. My dad spotted this clouded yellow and I sneakily crept up on it while feeding on Fleabane but I notice it didn't have the usual clouded yellow markings on its underwing, shown in my field guide...is it an aberrant form or a different species such as the pale clouded yellow?

Thanks, Felix

Looks like a male Clouded Yellow to me, Felix. Maybe it's just a bit worn. I'm sure Guy will correct me if I'm wrong.

Looks like a male Clouded Yellow to me.

The broad Black band of the Forewing, no yellow spots, making it a male.

Both Pale and Bergers have a very narrow black band and are very pale yellow in males, and white in females.
