Considering that this has been such a good year for migrants I am surprised not to have seen more hummingbird hawk moths. In fact I haven't seen any this year!
Has anyone else noticed a scarcity?
My father and I were remarking on exactly this the other day.
I have seen a few about but not that many. Those that I saw were mainly during mid to late July - one or two in Aug.
There are certainly many fewer than I saw in 2010, 2011 & about the same as what I saw 2012.
My brother in Denmark has been getting Silver Y, Painted Lady, Clouded Yellow.... but he hasn't mentioned anything about HBHM - he usually does.
Considering the number and range of migrants to the UK, I too am very surprised there are not more HBHM.
It may not be any great concern but it is surprising considering the conditions are perfect for them.
I guess there could be an emergence soon - the offspring from those which came in July?
