Im trying to load an image without using the thumbnails

That seems ok

My test effort might fail too but if I crash and burn will someone set me straight.
I'm going with upload attachment. I assume that the square bracket img bit is only for images on web pages?

That's right - if you want to post an image that is not hosted here, then use the [Img] tag.
