Swallowtail in Kent

Post by Sandy73 »

There has been a sighting of a Swallowtail at Reculver, north Kent. There are excellent photos on the very good blog by Marc Heath.

A lovely surprise. I remember reading recently there's been a spate of sightings in Dorset + some advanced larvae were found on Fennel in a garden near Wimborne.

And another seen today at Dungeness RSPB, Dennis Hide. It was seen briefly and photographed by one of the regular volunteers at mid morning feeding on teasel heads. It was then seen again briefly one and a half hours later by a group of five people. I was there but looking the wrong way :(
At least 9 Painted Ladies and 2 Clouded Yellows in the very same area. Also lots of Silver Y moths.

Many thanks sandy73 for your kind words. Thankfully a friend called me who had found it and I was able to get not only a few pleasing shots of this pristine butterfly but very much appreciate its size and beauty as it fed a few feet away at times. There are plenty of shots on my blog: http://www.marcheath.blogspot.com but I have attached a few of this stunner.

Another one seen and photograhed by a visitor near a footpath between Dungeness and Lydd last Thursday 8th August 2013. The site is about a mile inland from the Tuesday sighting.
