Aston Rowant - February

Post by MikeOxon »

During a visit to RHS Wisley yesterday (see post under the Wisley thread), I passed through the M40 cutting at Aston Rowant. Although the Oxfordshire plain below the ridge was devoid of snow, the drive up the cutting was very beautiful, with crisp deep snow on the hillsides, and encasing the branches of the trees. Being on a motorway, I couldn't stop for a photo but, on the way back, I pulled off at the Lewknor junction and took a photo back to the slopes.

I trust that there are plenty of Silver-spotted Skipper eggs, tucked in safely under that blanket of snow!

Nice shot, Mike. I'm sure there are plenty of early stage butterflies concealed under that blanket of snow. Let's hope we get conditions conducive to their development over the next few months. Instead of a warm March/April it would be nice if perfect seasonal conditions could arrive in May and/or June for a change!
