Marsh Frit or Not?

Post by Chris Pickford »

Two weeks ago in Central France I took this shot of a frit that I thought was a Marsh Frit, but now I'm not so sure.....
Expert opinion anyone?? marsh Frit or a v. Heath Frit??
It was flying along roadside verges, together with many High Brown Frits

Hi Chris,

Yes, this is a heath fritillary - a female, I think. Apart from the general appearance of the butterflies, which is actually quite distinctive, notice that marsh fritillary almost always has spots on the upperside of the hindwing, like Glanville fritillary. Marsh fritillary is (usually) far more two-tone, too.

Lovely picture!
