Post by Martin »

Bryan H and I visited the above sites today, and I think we had a pretty productive day. 15 species, 1 new one for Bryan (Large Skipper) and 3 firsts for me (Large Skipper, Small Blue and Marbled White).

Brimstone
Red Admiral
Speckled Wood
Small Heath
Meadow Brown
Common Blue
Small Blue
Small Copper
Large White
Small White
Marbled White
Green Hairstreak
Large Skipper
Dingy Skipper
Brown Argus

We think we saw an Adonis Blue as well...see ID section.

A few shots from today

Superb photographs on what sounds like a super day in the field. Interested to know your photograohic set-up. I managed small skipper, small white and large skipper on my patch in North Derbyshire, but no photos I'm afraid. They looked just like yours though. Off to set up me moth trap.

Wonderful shots, Martin!

Nice dew-drops with the Meadow Brown. The Marbled White was well deserved - it was quite something to watch a man of your age vault that fence...

Here's my best effort with the (underappreciated?) Meadow Brown:

And a nice bit of scenery at Aston Rowant (somewhere in there is our ovipositing Brimstone):

Even if it is common, I personally find the Meadow Brown one of the most difficult species to photograph - so well done to both of you!

Truthfully, I like the meadow brown and have had not much problem getting close to them. They do seem a bit hard to shoot, but with practise, it can be done. Nice pics, like the meadow brown best.
Cheers all,
