Welcome Angela - I too am a Dorsetian (although currently exiled to Salisbury) so if you need any ideas about where to go ask away and hopefully my limited knowldege may be of some use.

Have a goodun, and good butterflying

Hi guy's thanks for your replies and offer of help, much appreciated.i don't get on here very often at the moment. I have recently been going out to the swannery and the rodwell trail in weymouth, with a camera i had for my birthday :) and i am really enjoying seeing what's out there. i have been out again today but unfortunately there weren't too many buttereflies around today! is there a good time to go out to see butterflies? i guess later in the day for moths, although we did see one today, trying to find out what it's called lol,i shall keep looking.
