Holly Blue Sigma 150 images

Post by steveh »

Saw my first "resting" Holly blue this evening...shame the wind here made everything a butterfly could be sitting on would not be resting!!!!
Taken handheld standing on a chair with Sigma 150mm macro and its crazy tiny DOF...

A few others on my WWW bit below.

Pritty nice. I had same problem with a common blue, wind blew it past me and it disappeared. Preserverence pays off. Keep trying. Its great when you see your butterfly of that kind in wild for the first time.

Thanks Dave,
Secondly does anyone know why Holly blue butterflies like the bush it is resting on?I would like to know the name of the plant.
I dont know the name but it is an evergreen shrub with waxy leaves with occasional tiny white flowers which turn into black buds? also it stinks after it has rained???

I have seen holly blues resting on this plant shrub/hedge on many occasion in various places.
And in the photo above it had its proboscis out along the leaf.

Kind regards
Steve

Don't know if this really helps, but I have seen holly blues stay near their foodplant which is either ivy or holly. Since where I see them there is a holly and a ivy bush side-by-side, I am not 100% sure.
Cheers all,

Just the shrub as described above?

The holly blues I have seen DO land on the holly bush, but more higher up. Post a pic of the bush leaves and I might be able to tell you what it is.

Great clear pic!
