Mystery larva

I have recently got back from Turkey (report to follow shortly). Most butterfly-related identities have been established but I am still having trouble with the identity of this larva. I have included as much of the host plant as I can in the photo. It was taken last week near Olu Deniz in the south-west of the country at a site close to the coast and almost at sea level.

I have already run this past Pete, and he is as interested as I am to know what it is

You don't say what size it was, but it has the look of a Swallowtail, possibly 3rd instar machaon.

I didn't know swallowtail larvae had those spiky things on their backs. But if early instars do, and if it is a swallowtail, then the colour scheme quite closely matches alexanor.

That's what fooled me! The earlier instars do, indeed, have spikes!

Thanks guys. Yes it was quite small , so will be an early instar. I am just finalising my report, the first part of which should be ready by Sunday.
