I've just been going over my notes from Spain in September and I have another ID request, although only through description I'm afraid.

From a car window I saw a sulpher yellow butterfly with a black trim along the top of the forewings but no other obvious markings. This was in flight mind and I was of course moving in the car so it was only a fleeting glimpse.

The nearest I can find on Matt Rowling's site is the Greenish Black Tip which he says is known from a few colonies in Spain. His pictures were taken in Morocco in Spring although he comments it breeds year round there.

I'm not too sure, anyone have any ideas if it may have been something else?

Thanks

Greenish black-tip is a small butterfly - typically much smaller than an orange tip. That would probably have struck you if you were lucky enough to see this species from the car.

What made the sighting different from, say, Berger's pale clouded yellow, which would be the default bright yellow butterfly there, I imagine? You talk about a black trim along the leading edge, which Berger's lacks - but greenish black-tip also lacks this.

Thanks for the feedback Guy, unlikely to be a Greenish Black Tip then, although the colour was spot on. It was Clouded Yellow size.

I imagine I didn't see the whole black trim as it was in flight and I was in a moving car so I reckon more likely to be Berger's but I will record as only possible I think!

Cheers
