Tortoiseshell Pupae

I collected up 30 plus caterpillars (small tortoiseshell) at the beginning of july as they were trying to cross a road in their hundreds!

These promptly turned into pupae in a container.

All but two have hatched and flown (after ten days). The two left have become hard and are starting to get yellow patches on the black.

Have they just died or could they be infected by parasites etc??
