Lepidoptera [ not Butterflies ]

The Butterflies may not be around yet but the Moth season has begun,
1 and 2 are both Pale Brindled Beauty`s and 3 is a March Moth.

One March moth tonight at my house (I had to get this fast as this one was moving about so much and I could not see it well as it was dark):



First lepidoptera I have seen this year besides a winter moth last month, now just rol on the butterflies

I was really pleased to find this curled up fella, i've never come across Scarlet Tiger Moths at Broughton Downs before.

Pyrausta aurata, sometimes called mint moth. Snapped on Saturday with Sony A700, 70-210 F4 'Beercan' with attached Canon close up lens.

The flies are Rhagionids, often referred to as Snipe Flies or Down-Looker Flies!

Hi Paul, Did the Moth have a Purple sheen, if yes it is probably a Campion, if it did not it still could be either, Steve

Not really, hence my Lychnis judgement, but I've not really seen enough to know.. so I take your point entirely!! Not much doubt about this one, in the trap last night!

That's a beauty, Paul. I've never seen eyed hawk before. Are they common?

According to the books they are common, but this is only the second one I've ever seen... they are nightlife, so you'd have to trap to be sure, but this is my first year doing so, and here it was!!! I'm afraid the shot wasn't my best, exposure rather clumsy to say the least, Oh well! - I did try another shot...

This is on a stalk of grass near my pond at the moment along with another one...I am pretty sure it's a Six-Spot Burnet chrysalis



as I also found this guy on the birds-foot trefoil

Both burnets but I'm not expert enough to work out how many spots they'll have.

I was taking a guess at the 6-spot because I have seen them around here in the past, but without a positive ID it could equally be a 5 spot. I suppose I will just have to wait and see what turns up.
