Post by nick patel »

Hi,

just out of interest, whats a high number of species to see in one trip/weekend/day, and what are everyone's highest - if you know em?

Cheers, Nick.

Hi Nick,

For a varied number of species I saw this at a bog not too far away from where I live:

Common Blue
Common Heath
Six and Narrow-Bordered five spot burnets
Dot moths
Small Heath
Large White
Small White
Dark Green Fritillary
Meadow Brown
Peacock
Red Admiral
Small Tortoiseshell
Ringlet

and the most I have seen of one species in an area was 200+ Meadow Browns at Killard Point NNR, but that was over a 1-2 mile area and in August on a cloudy/rainy. And at that bog I mentioned, over 50+ Small Heaths and same amount of Common Heath too or more.

Also a field near my house had hundreds of large/small and GV whites in it last year, but it was a field of Kale, so I can see why that was so.

When I was at Montaighs Moss last May, I saw about 7 different species of butterfly:

Orange Tip
Small and Large White
Wood White
Green Hairstreak
Small Heath
Marsh Fritillary
Meadow Brown

It was alright for a cloudy day. Just depends mainly on:

The location and what species are found there
Weather conditions
Time of year

Nice site Nick, :) I think the most species I've seen in one day was 23, on Stockbridge Down, Hampshire. and the same number at Durlston CP Dorset. Both were in the month of August.
