Butterfly Conservation Magazine wrapper

Post by Trev Sawyer »

I was rather surprised to learn that one of the top 10 butterflies seen in last years Big Butterfly Count as shown on the wrapper of the latest copy of the BC magazine was a butterfly normally seen in Sri Lanka. The "Small White" looks suspiciously like a Psyche butterfly to me (Leptosia nina)? I have to confess to being a little disappointed at such a sloppy mistake - maybe they did it deliberately to see if it created a talking point. If so, it worked

What a bizarre mistake! A pinned specimen of L. nina (and a pinned large white, too) instead of a small white!

I'd like to think there is a clever reason for this. Maybe you'll get a prize for being the first to spot it. Thanks for the reminder, though - I must get my copy redirected!

Amazing faux pas, Trev; so much so that your theory sounds eminently plausible.

Psyche does mean ‘Butterfly’ in Greek … Too obscure? :D
