I found these two in the garden yesterday and I think I found the right pages in the Collins guide for identifying them, but I'd be grateful for confirmation or correction please.
Thanks,

Re: Lincs garden May 24
Spot on for the GVW, David, but looking at the broad black forewing border showing through on the second shot, I'd say this one is a Large White.
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks, Dave,
I'm no expert but the white didn't seem to be as large as what I always call the Cabbage White (is that the same as a Large White).

Re: Lincs garden May 24
I would concur with Large White for the second. The black is too extensive for a Small White.
Cabbage white is a generic term used by gardeners/farmers for whites that lay their eggs on brassicas, so incorporates both Small & Large Whites.

Visitors to my garden

A poor year for springtime butterflies in my Somerset garden, however the arrival of my first sighting of a Painted lady yesterday 12-05-2024 ( ("belle dame" in French),) hopeful this will set a trend and more visitors will arrive to add some cheer after such a dismal winter.

Nice to see that Painted Lady, Jim. Hopefully I won't have to wait till late July to see my first this year!!
Re: Lincs garden May 24
I was very pleased to see my first painted lady of the year on Sunday, here in north-east London.
