You've already named it Charles, it's a Red Underwing (or Scarlet Underwing). There's a handful of very similar species, Catacola sp, need my books to get it to species and I'm on my phone on a train. The commonest and most widespread is Catacola nupta though.

Congrats Charles :) This is the moth I've yet to get ... yet have had its Blue-winged cousin on a few occasions (see latest on my Long-tailed Blue post viewtopic.php?t=11129&start=0#p165877

hehehe i was not trying to find any moths... it just flew in to my room and went bonkers on the ceiling light. at first i thought it was a red admiral but then it sat down & i realized it was a moff

luckily my camera was charged up & i managed to get some decent pics. it was reluctant to leave ... i had to turn off the light to complete the eviction.

I remember once, one of these large Red Underwing moths started flying around inside a bus, where it caused great consternation amongst some of the passengers!
