Ringlets France - ID confirmation needed

Post by Sylvie_h »

Hi,

Can anybody help me with the identification of these 2 butterflies ?

Sorry about the quality of the photos, I had to do a lot of cropping to be able to add them to this thread. Both pictures are from a scan of a slide.

First image 201 taken in Haute Savoie - 1800m - I think this could be a large ringlet but not sure...
Second image 202 taken in the French Jura - No idea what this one is.... Not even sure it is a ringlet …

Thanks a lot,
Sylvie

The one in the first post is a Ringlet Aphantopus hyperantus, ab. areta. The second one could be a Piedmont Ringlet Erebia meolans but I'm far from an expert on European butterflies and I'd wait for the exports to confirm it's true identity :)

Second one looks like a male Scotch Argus to me.

D'accord. 'Frange pie' insuffisante pour être euryale.

I thought arete at first for the top one too, but the spots looked wrong. There is another aberration, centrifera, that seems closer.

La Chapelle-des-Bois, Doubs.
This Ringlet (aphantopus hyperantus arete) photo was taken at La Chapelle-des-Bois, Doubs 2018, no great distance from the Jura, France, it may be of interest.

Found close to this grim reminder that the plauge virus visited the village in 1639., take care everyone.

Thank you All for your help with ID.
I would have never guessed it was a Ringlet (looking at the website that you have provided Guy, I did not know there were so many forms of Ringlet), so I have learned something. Thank you.

I will go with Scotch Argus for the second one, I don't understand why I did not manage to identify this specimen as such...Some more work needed here I think.

Medard, it is quite incredible to know that some people were buried there in this field back in 1639 because of the plague... very sad ! Now we have COVID …

That's quite a sobering signpost, Jim, although I must say it looks to be a very inviting meadow.
