HBF or DGF?

Post by David Tipping »

HBF or DGF? It's great when you know the jargon and can bewilder novice browsers, but this fritillary identification business is doing my head in!
I took the first two shots at Gait Barrows and the last at Foulshaw Moss. I'm pretty sure the middle shot is a dark green, but couldn't get a shot of the underwings of the other two.
Will somebody please put me out of my misery and identify them?

Hi David,

1. High Brown Fritillary (female).

2. Silver-washed Fritillary (female).

3. Dark Green Fritillary (female).

So - a hat trick! You must be using the right aftershave :)

Cheers,

- Pete

How do you know they are females Pete? Something to do with David's aftershave? ;-)

Wing shape (females have much more-rounded wings) and lack of a sex brand (for those that are upperside shots).

Cheers,

Fantastic! I didn't realize silver washed existed as far north as Gait Barrows.
By the way, my aftershave might work with fritillaries but it doesn't seem to have the same effect with blondes, brunettes and red heads.

Sorry to hijack your post David!

Hmm mine isn't working either, perhaps talking about butterflies all night puts them off eh?

Silver-washed are right on the limit of their northern range at Gait Barrows. So - well done!

In terms of blondes, brunettes and red heads, I assume you're bringing moths into the equation - I must be getting old, but my immediate thought was "White Ermine", "Ruby Tiger" and "Garden Tiger" :)

Cheers,

- Pete

A bit rushed - but to answer Wayne's question - open up the following:

So, yes, I think Wayne's photo is a male Dark Green Fritillary.
