Bad photo, but can anyone help?

Post by Deborah »

Hello. I've seen this butterfly(?) a few times now. But try as I might I can't get a better photo! It seems to hardly ever keep its wings still. It has been feeding mainly on Centranthus and moves very much like a Hummingbird Hawk Moth. Is it actually a butterfly - or a moth? Any help appreciated.

That's a Silver Y moth Autographa gamma. They migrate to the UK every summer and there is currently a big influx ongoing.

Silver Y arrived in north Scotland with the Swallows and House Martins and the moths are in good numbers at the moment.

Indeed, very difficult to photograph. Burst mode might give the best chance.
