Grayling ID Help Needed

Post by Catteraxe »

The image below was taken in the French Alps (Parc du Mercantour) at approx. 1000m. Is it a Rock Grayling?

Kevin,

I think you are spot on with your ID. I would go for Rock Grayling.
I saw some in the Mercantour a couple of years ago along with False and Striped Graylings (of which yours is not).

Hi Kevin,
I am not against Rock Grayling.
Time, place, altitude and aspect are favourable.
Keep an open mind to taxons. These seem to change rapidly. Dont be surprised if you hear speak of 'Hipparchia hermione genava' in your location.

Thanks both Kev and Chris. I'll go with Rock Grayling for now.
