Some IDs please

Post by Chris Jackson »

Hi Folks,
I know we have some very knowledgeable people out there who could put a name to these insects without even opening a book.
I have friends who would like to know what these 3 insects are and whether they are associated.

Hi Chris,

First one may be a Pine Hawkmoth, but I'm not convinced...
second one I think is a Convolvulus Hawkmoth
Third looks like a Lime Hawkmoth cat, (they turn this pinky/purple colour when ready to pupate)
Some addictions are good for the soul!

Thanks Buggy,

That's a very good start and will allow me to check those species out on the Web.

Cheers, Chris

Both of the moths look like Convolvulus to me.

You may be right, Roger, if we try and ignore the lighting difference and image the wings closed, they could be one and the same.

Both moths are 'Convolvulus Hawk-moth' and the caterpillar is a 'Lime Hawk-moth' prior to pupation.

Hi Chris,

If you were in the UK I'd be confident in saying it's Helcystogramma rufescens: http://mothdissection.co.uk/species.php ... _rufescens

However bearing in mind where you are there maybe confusion species.

Thanks for trying, Charles,
but I think Nigel has got it spot on.

Thank you Nigel, that checks out quite nicely.
