Re: Stop the New Town in Hampshire!!!
If anyone wants to see the evasive bull sh** response from the Office of the PM check out this link. How can so many words actually say so very little...?

Re: Stop the New Town in Hampshire!!!
I'm looking for the bit where it explains why we need new towns...
If it is to meet the needs of a rising population then we are all doomed, because the actual effect of it will be to fuel population increase, resulting in an apparent 'need' for still more towns at some stage in the future, and so on ad infinitum or at least until everyone lives in such close proximity to everyone else that we all die of the Black Death.
I'm not really exaggerating. One government, one day, has to say, 'No more houses - we have now FINISHED building this country'. The most appropriate time was the turn of the millennium. If no government says this, then logically the whole of Great Britain will be concreted over at some date in the future.

Couldn't agree more. I'm still trying to understand why we need "economic growth". What's wrong with "economic stability"?

Too true.
Besides, it's a complete myth that there is a shortage of property in this country. What there is though is a grossly inflated housing market driven by excessive greed. The saddest thing is that most of the individuals who are happy to add fuel to the fire are stitching up their own children and grand children.
Nice.

Guy, I had in mind the turn of the previous century!padfield wrote:The most appropriate time was the turn of the millennium. Guy
How true, Felix! So long as we measure our "done well" in this life by material aggrandizement and, in particular, how big a house we live in, the pressure on land will continue.Felix wrote:... There's a whiff of "I'm alright, Jack, now the rest of you stop it" in these protests. We used to live as extended families, unhealthily stuffed in too small a living space, but that no longer meets our aspirations. It's no good blaming government - of whatever hue, it simply has to come up with solutions to the numbers!
Population and our own lifestyle expectations are driving the problem.

Worth keeping an eye on the proposed town at Middle Quinton (Warks) as the developer has a track record of working with Butterfly Conservation to generate habitat for rare species on brownfield sites.

Re: Stop the New Town in Hampshire!!!
Stop one, and another one pops up. I was told last night that there is a plan to build 2500 new homes at a small hamlet called Lopcombe Corner, these new homes are to serve for workers at the Porton Down research centre. Lopcombe Corner occupies the lowest part of the surrounding downs and links up Porton Down with Broughton Downs, anyone who has any knowledge of these two sites, will know how nationally important they are, and to sever any tenuous link that they still have, could be a disaster, not good

Re: Stop the New Town in Hampshire!!!
No this is a Government " you must build this many houses scheme". Wiltshire was told by the Government to build 8000 new homes last year, they missed that target by 4000, so now they must build 12,000 new homes this year. The need for housing at the Porton Down research centre is just a smoke screen, as that place only employs 800 people, and half of the base is moving to Andover soon. So in reality, only 400 people will work there, and the local movement is trying to say it is building 2500 homes for the base employees. Believe me locally this is nightmare
