Wood Whites Midlands

Post by njs5870 »

Decent weather this week I think. Any good Wood White sites in Midlands (I live North Staffs) where I can pop down during the afternoon please?

Don't know if Wicken Wood http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=47 ... &ay=241215 is too far for you.

I know this is short notice, but I intend to pop to Bury Ditches tomorrow and any site info would be fantastic. If there are any 'best' spots to try on site njs5870 then I would be really grateful for any info. I am popping down with someone who has been very ill and her mobility isn't great so searching all over would not be the best strategy. If you could give me some tips it would be great, thanks in advance :)

I basically parked in the car park and there is a noticed on a path which goes up the slope by a picnic table (another wide path goes out of the car park with a gate across). I walked up the slope a bit to a man carved in a tree trunk on right hand side. This path is narrower and just walked up here only a short distance and it opebed up on the left. One fluttering there. Glad she's up and out. You told us at Hale a few weekends ago. Good luck

Thanks for such a quick response :) Brilliant. We will head down with extra confidence now. Glad we keep bumping into each other :) She's out of hospital by the way but in between treatments, well enough to do some butterflying in the sun, so thanks again :)

Thanks again njs, did the Red Walk from the car park & saw at total of 32 Wood Whites, also a Painted Lady (again!!), 2 Green Hairstreaks, 8 Common Blues (inc 2 females of the caerulea form), 6 Large Skippers, a Large White, 3 Speckled Woods and a Red Admiral. Speckled Yellow moths were seen as well as Brown Silver-line and Treble-bar, also male and female Beautiful Demoiselle Damselflies were on the wing. My first visit and a great little site :)

Many of the Wood Whites were engaged in courtship behaviour, but my camera broke before the first shot :( so I had to be happy with snapshots on my iPhone:

Apologies for not responding sooner - but I've been informed that Wood White is no longer found at this site. One of the most depressing email conversations I've had of late, even beating the tax man into 2nd place :(

Cheers,
