Essex or Small

Post by bugboy »

Saw this today. Was going for Small Skipper until it settled. Managed two quick shots before a passing Large Skipper ruined any chances of more. Pretty sure it's an Essex but I'm second guessing myself now  .

Hi Bugboy,

Definitely a male Small Skipper. The bend in the sex brand being the main clear indicator.

Good hunting.

Kindest regards. Mark

Hi Buggy,

You need to see the UNDERSIDE of the antennae before you can be definitive. But, in this case, the sex brand would seem to indicate Small Skipper.

Thanks guys. I'm guessing the underside of the antennae being shaded from the sun making it look dark fooled me into thinking it was an Essex. When I looked at it on my comp the sex brand looked Small so I was a bit confused. Thank god for this site! :D
