Re: August 2009 Sightings

A very nice little film Steve, clearly showing the classic stilted jerky walk that a female Grayling adopts when about to oviposit. A female Grayling will spend a considerable amount of time selecting where to lay with the tip of her abdomen probing around the vegetation. They will often lay on dri...

Re: Painted Lady influx!!!

Why are the painted ladies heading west and fast?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum to ask but can anyone explain why this Painted Lady influx is flying so fast and all seem to be heading west? Been seeing loads in the last few days here and they all seem to be following the same pattern? For example was at a pals house today and everyone ( and ther...

Re: Ticks

Last year I ended up with a tick in my leg after visiting east blean woods. And no deer are found there? I discovered it "wriggling" into my leg the next morning and in a panic yanked the body out. My leg did go a tad red but that was about it. The head is still in my leg to this day,I did ...

Thanks Alex - I shall certainly visit Minsmere and Dunwich Heath while I am here (I hope you had a pint or two of Adnams at the Eel's Foot when you visited - if not, come back soon). Guy Sorry Steve - but it's not uncommon for posts to go a little off-topic when Bryan H pops up with a poem or quip!...

How many UK Butterflies members own a Sigma 150mm?

Another wet boring day and was hoping to visit Lydden today as well! :(

I was wondering how many of you (like myself) use the Sigma 150mm lens?
And if anyone has been dissapointed with it in any way?...very fine DOF etc,or very impressed?

Regards

Hmmmmm. I think we have a confusion here with noise - as in shutter noise and mirror slap, and noise - as in the digital equivalent of grain in high ISOs. Roger Harding Reading through this post I was waiting for someone to reply with this. I own a D70 and just bought a D200 and I am suprised by th...

I think splattering these things is all part of the fun and there's a fantastic sense of achievement when you get it right. On a serious note, it's perhaps worth mentioning deer ticks, which are apparently becoming increasingly common, especially in woodland sites. I understand they inject some sor...

Reculver..Kent

In the only hour I had I saw Essex skippers Large white Green veined white Six spot burnet moths Meadow browns Small tortoiseshell Small coppers Marbled whites ...

I too have recently noticed how "flighty" Marbled Whites can be. At the time of pressing the shutter he was flat out on the clover! I was also fascinated at how the legs are so low compared to the abdomen in initial take off. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa64/cuttlefish_photos/marble...
