Re: Large White (not for the faint-hearted)

Nice image and gruesome observation (especially the one trying to mate with the others half body), suppose it could have been a dragonfly (could have ripped it when trying to catch it in flight and only got half of it?), wouldn't be a spider as they wrap them up or take prey away. Whatever the cause...

Re: July 2011

I was at Copeland Island yesterday (about 18 miles away from Scotland or so) and there is three Islands, Copeland Island, Mew Island and Lighthouse Island (Mew Island has the lighthouse since they moved it from the Lighthouse Island since it wasn't a good place to be seen) the lighthouse is the brig...

Re: July 2011

I was out walking along country path that lead to an old oak/beech/elm forest (Known locally as the Glen due to the river, the Glen Burn, running through it) and went though it, 21C and warm despite some cloud. As I was going there, saw several ringlets, a red admiral and 3-4 Udea lutealis and 2 lar...

Re: What to do?

Thanks Mike, I have wanted to upgrade my camera for ages and now that I have the money and the fact my current one is not working right, seems best time. I initially decided to clean the dust out of the camera and that's how I made dust worse and had to send it to be cleaned. I do want to try gettin...

Re: High flying common blue?

Thanks, your right Gibster, I found a female common blue about an hour ago and it flew pretty high before coming down to land.

Re: What to do?

I was just out to put my moth trap out in a old oak/beech forest about a mile from here and had to walk the whole way. I only brought my JVC video camera and happened to see my first common blue of the year (a female). This is when it came to me, I would have liked to have photographed it. I like ph...

Re: What to do?

Cheers Vince :D Most of that video was shot in one day, exception of the rabbit, violet and frog which were filmed at different times. Have a USB keyboard so made the music for it in around 2 hours. Hi Mike, I am into photography and ever since I got my 500D back from getting fixed, I have noticed t...

High flying common blue?

I was just given a report of a common blue and was told that it was seen, it flew about 100ft up in the air to the top of a tree, then came back down. I asked if it was a holly blue since they are the blue that flies the highest, but was told that this person saw a bright blue colour of upperside an...

What to do?

I am saving up and will have around £700 in a few weeks saved and not quite sure what to get. I am currently working on a series of episodes I'll post on youtube that are about butterflies and moths and wondering what the best option to do is, upgrade my Canon 500D to a 600D (might not have enough f...

Re: Moving trees

Some never learn do they? Its not easy to get a tree to that age, and just to have it die? I usually dig a big, wide hole, water it really well, pop in the tree, cover it up and water again and water in times of drought (which happened to my oak tree, it didn't start producing leaves to well after n...

Re: Countryfile Sunday 3rd July - Large Blue

Information has to be delivered in tweets and soundbites these days for people to be able to absorb it. Is that really true? Or is it more a question of the people at the top thinking that this is the case? Well the way I see it, not everyone is going to like every part of a show like this, they tu...

Re: Canon 500D video problem

I have a scandisk extreme III 16GB card. The camera didn't overheat due to only using it there and then. I'll try clearing the card and formatting it and trying again, maybe that was the problem, although it said 15minutes free shooting on 1080p HD, suppose there wasn't enough memory to record that?...

Canon 500D video problem

I have used my Canon 500D to shoot general video that doesn't need the manual settings but sometimes come up with a problem. Came up today. Sometimes when shooting video, the video will only record for a few seconds then stop. My camera said it can hold 15 minutes of video on my card, but when I got...

Re: Countryfile Sunday 3rd July - Large Blue

I yelled at the screen when that happened  So did I. Was good though, but I wouldn't be sitting on an ant nest I used to enjoy Countryfile but lately I think the quality has dropped quite a bit and I rarely watch a full show without getting bored or frustrated and switching channel. Starting t...

Danbury lakes, Essex. About 15 meadow Brown, 10 Ringlet, 6 Small Skipper, 1 Red Admiral, and the White Plume below. Also saw the Blue below, not sure of sex or species. Thought it could be a female Common Blue, or a Brown Argus. Rich White Plume Danbury 3 July 2011.jpg unknown blue.jpg Hi, That is ...

Re: July 2011

Was out doing a butterfly transect at a fen/bog which is 5 acres roughly and full of plants, trees and found 150+ ringlets 20+ narrow-bordered five spot burnet, 10 straw dot and 3 small tortoiseshell. Seems butterflies are a little lacking lately, except for ringlets and meadow browns. It was 25C th...
