High flying common blue?

Post by Dave McCormick »

I was just given a report of a common blue and was told that it was seen, it flew about 100ft up in the air to the top of a tree, then came back down. I asked if it was a holly blue since they are the blue that flies the highest, but was told that this person saw a bright blue colour of upperside and the brownish underside and he has seen common blues and holly blues and from what he said, defiantly seemed like a common blue, but the flying high seemed odd as I have never seen one do this before. Anyone seen one fly high up like this? There is no wind out so it couldn't have been that.
Cheers all,

Hi Dave,

I haven't seen one flying that high but contrary to popular belief I have seen them flying and nectaring higher than head height on bramble and also on buddleia.

Cheers

Hi Dave,

I had a 100% Common Blue fly out of a grassy meadow, approach a woodland edge, zig-zag its way up to the canopy of tall oaks, then disappear over the top of them and out of sight. Adversely, I've seen Holly Blue nectaring on Daisy. It would definitely help if the darn critters all read the same books!

Cheers,

Gibster.

Thanks, your right Gibster, I found a female common blue about an hour ago and it flew pretty high before coming down to land.
