Re: June 2009 Sightings

Walter's Copse Newtown was buzzing this evening after work with 10 species: red admiral, white admiral, swf, comma, large white, painted lady, small and large skipper, marbled white and gatekeeper (first of the year). Also good broad-bodied chaser which posed for photos.Returned home to find small wh...

Re: June 2009 Sightings

Hi All, I've run loads of field outings for Butterfly Conservation over the years - but I don't remember any going quite as well as the trip to Botany Bay yesterday (Sussex/Surrey borders). The meeting started at 9 am, so I put some of my rancid 'Hau Loc' belachan down at 8.55 am. At 8.58 am a pris...

Allt Mhuic Nature Reserve,

My wife and I are going to Aviemore at the beginning of next month and plan to visit the above reserve to try to possibly see large heath, chequered skipper and scotch argus. Any comments about the reserve and other places to visit for natural history in the Cairngorms National Park area?

Re: June 2009 Sightings

I was pleased to see my first marbled whites of the season on Brading Down in overcast weather. Also I was pleased to get a good photo of a small tortoiseshell- looks sharp edge to edge and a lovely row of blue spots. :D

Re: June 2009 Sightings

Really pleased with the work done at Ningwood Common Reserve on the Isle of Wight by the Hants and IOW Wildlife Trust. A very large area of scrub has been cleared and the small PBFs are now moving out on to the newer parts which have grown over the past couple of years. I saw 6 there this evening pl...

Glanville Fritillaries on the One Show BBC

I was involved last week with the BBC filming for the One Show to be shown on 27 July 2009 with George Mc Gavin ( retired professor of entomology from Oxford) and Fiona Mountain ( author of the Lady of the Butterfly about Eleanor Glanville) photographing GFs at Bonchurch on the IOW. Should be fun to...

Re: May 2009 Sightings

In the one site on the Isle of Wight where there are small pearl-bordered fritillaries I saw one today much earlier than normal. It is the Hants and IOW Wildlife Trust reserve at Ningwood Common. The site has been extensively cleared of scrub so in a few years time there may be many more butterflies...

Re: May 2009 Sightings

Any ideas what I am doing wrong as my photos look very vivid and with impact on my computer like the MF above taken by xmilehigh, whereas when uploaded to the Sightings page they appear washed out. In old file terms the photos are like Velvia on my computer but like Kodachrome on the internet. Any c...
