Dave McCormick wrote: Some species need to be netted to tell whay they are such as the Small Autiman, Autimal and November moths as they need genetalia to tell what they are.
But why do you "NEED" to now what they are?

Lime Hawkmoth

Please forgive me for the cardinal sin of posting a moth  She was so lovely I thought others would like to see her. Guy, If I were to pick a person to do the netting for research it would be you. You are so "into" butterflies that you have my total respect...crikey, you've probably forgotten more about b/flies than I'll ever know. Like I said before, in the right hands I don't have a problem with it...i...

Hi Andrew I think that netting a butterfly, even if no physical harm comes to it, is quite a dramatic intervention as it goes about its business. If it's wardens or trained volunteers etc for the purposes of identification in support of monitoring vulnerable species and so on, then okay. The intent...

Eric, criticism was not intended. I, too, am pushed for time, so when I posted my reply it was in the hope that I wouldn't have to read a post three times in the future just to make sure I understood it. As for spelling, I'm the world's worst! If I didn't have the spell checker on the Google t...

That was the one HF I found on Saturday...went back today and once again only found this same individual. I think this may be the last one for this year.

I stand corrected, and apologize for misinterpreting the OP. If no "additional" collections are made then fine, and I see no point in not using the data already available.

Hi Pete, The bit I find offensive is netting (maybe hurting/damaging) butterflies, then killing them just so someone can be sure they got the right tick in the book. I love butterflies, each and every one of them, and I'd love to see them all. But if doing so causes harm then I'm quite happy to go t...

Without the use of capital letters at the start of sentences, commas, and full stops your post is difficult to read.

Re: Using "set" specimens on the species pages

the upperside of a Pale Clouded Yellow versus a Berger's Clouded Yellow We're back to Lep manners and using nets. Do we protect butterflies for us, or for the sake of the butterflies? I feel the only people who "NEED" to know the difference are twitchers, people putting ticks in books, an...

In the absence of any other explanations I think Bryans theory sounds very reasonable. In the last post it looks as though the white has been rubbed off the inner leg...the area one would assume is most susceptible to chaffing on grass/plants etc.

While taking photos of Silver-studded Blues last week I saw 4 men with nets...3 were after moths (they were together) and the other was after dragonflies. It got me thinking, the result of which I have vowed never to use a net. The thought of even slight damage to a butterfly goes against the grain ...

Dave,
I'd love to share but I've been asked not to disclose the location as the Heath frits have a very tenuous hold there. However, East Blean Woods in Kent is a good site. Hope this helps...

There were about 8 of them in as many square yards, all shimmering thier wings and flicking thier abdomens. I'm guessing that they were either spreading pheramones or maybe drying thier wings. Anyone?

I was photgraphing a Heath Frit today when pair of West Highland Terriors, to the acompanyment of "Come hear...come hear!", ran straight over the poor butterfly like a pair of steamrollers (it was cold and raining so it was a bit dopey). I'm afraid I lost my temper a bit and chewed a strip...
