Anyone living in or near Herefordshsire

A very old friend of mine owns a reasonable sized farm near Leominster . The farm has both meadows and a reasonable area of deciduous woodland with oaks and sallow . He is interested in conservation but has little knowledge of butterfly species . From what he has told me the woods may contain popula...

Re: Advice Please on mowing wildflower meadows

Somewhere on here is a thread I started which contained a link to Bedelands Farm Nature reserve and a study done there by Sussex University on the results of mowing/grazing etc on butterfly numbers in flower rich meadows . Googling Bedelands Farm should lead you find it .

Re: Southwater Woods, West Sussex 03/07/11

Hi Susie Many Thanks for all your efforts in making it a really great day out . In addition to the species you list .some of the group ( but not me ) saw Small Tortoiseshell and I and some others can add 2 or more Commas ( one an unusual very dark aberration ) and on my walk back to Southwater 2 fre...

Re: Paper lures

Quite by accident I have found that the Silver Washed Frits of Southwater will swoop down and investigate me when carrying an orange Sainsbury's shopping bag and only last Monday a Purple Emperor glid ( or is it glided ) past me to investigate my mauve coloured shirt .

Re: Susie

Hi Susie I was up at Southwater this morning , bumped into Neil Hulme and his father , Eric . Our consensus is that the PE's are still 1 to 2 weeks off emerging yet . I am sure you will see them first !!!! We saw quite a number of White Admirals and a few Silver Washed Frits some of both of these we...

Re: Tottenhoe

A little off the direct topic but the Sussex BC site has a report of a new chalk tip nature reserve at Hollingbury Brighton specially created for Small Blues . A recent visit assessed the numbers at 800 to 1000 undoubtedly the highest in the UK for one site .

Re: May 2011

Went on a day out to Castle Hill NR , Woodingdean , Brighton today . A rather underrated Chalk Downland Valley site . Re: OUSE ESTUARY NATURE RESERVE NEWHAVEN

Although no longer in a position to visit this site daily , I still make occasional trips to see what is about . To the 22 species seen by myself and 3 species recorded by others in 2009 , I have since been able to add Dingy Skipper in 2010 and Orange Tip this year . The site does seem to be around ...

Re: April 2011

Apart from several visits to Mill Hill , Shoreham where I can add little to other sightings there except perhaps a Small Copper seen last Monday , my sightings have been confined to Grand Avenue Worthing and adjacent seats . There is a very healthy population of Speckled Woods and numerous Holly Blu...

Re: How times change - or Aphrodite lost!

I am sorry to disagree with Pete Eeles on this topic . There is a perverse logic in saying that an introduction such as the Marbled Fritillary is bad , but it may be ok if the offspring had arrived in the country via larva arriving in a load of timber or bedding plants or it would be fine if they we...

Hi Neil ,
Somehow I dob't think this year will have as good an end to it as last year . I saw the very last Clouded Yellow at Ouse Est on November 10th and Speckled Wood Small White both in early November with other Clouded Yellows .
