Re: September 2008 votes

Firstly, I would like to congratulate xmilehigh for such a stunning winning shot and although it didn’t receive one of my three votes it was high on my shot list. The quality of the pictures from so many of the entrants in this competition is simply breathtaking. Well done everyone, you all get my v...

Re: What can be done to stop this?

Cotswold Cockney, You asked in response to, Some how I don’t think it likely that he is breading and releasing butterflies and just keeping a few extra’s to sell in order to fund the project. saying, Why do you say that? There are some very resourceful breeders worldwide. The reason why I doubt this...

OK Neil and Guy and All

The majority rules, It’s a Common.
Should I chose a pair of glasses, start reading all the literature again or chose my own blindfold before standing against a wall?

Re: Dragonfly help please

Guy, As I said, One can seldom be one hundred percent positive with some of the more tricky identifications of what are visually very similar species I think you are equally as likely to be correct with striolatum and your reasoning is also sound. It’s a shame there is not a picture of the dorsal su...

Re: Dragonfly help please

Hi Deano, I Thought I would post these two pictures of Sympetrum striolatum - Common Darter taken 14th September for you to compare against your photo. They clearly show the yellow stripes down the legs. As you can see they are a very distinct feature of this species. Also as can be seen they do not...

Re: Dragonfly help please

Hi Deano, One can seldom be one hundred percent positive with some of the more tricky identifications of what are visually very similar species but for my money I would say your pictures are of an immature male Sympetrum sanguineum - Ruddy Darter mainly because of the “wasted” apearance of the abdom...

Re: can butterflies hear?

Well having read the responses made to this question “Can butterflies hear” posed by Emily and responded to by Guy, Eccles, Dave McCormick, and Cotswold Cockney it would seem the one thing I was completely right about was when I said as this site seems to me to be as much about educating any of us w...

Re: can butterflies hear?

Very nice photos as always Emily. This is a very interesting topic that poses the question what senses do butterflies have? If anything written below is incorrect, these comments are only what I have come to believe and are not intended as to be quoted as scientific fact. Please put me right anywher...

What can be done to stop this?

Today I went on “ebay” in the hope of finding a charity pin badge of a Camberwell Beauty for the “Bedra” Charity, that I had once seen, just to add to my newly started collection of butterfly memorabilia – Stamps, Tea Cards etc. I typed in a search for Camberwell beauty and was horrified when I foun...

Re: Help with Caterpillar ID’s Please.

Thanks Chris, With your suggestion and Pete’s I have done a quick google search for “White Ermine caterpillar” and found this link, which would suggest you are right. http://www.habitas.org.uk/moths/larva.asp?item=6146 Apart from a slight colour variation in the dorsal stripe, which could be due to ...

Re: Yet another huge development on green belt land

Soon it will no longer be “in England’s green and pleasant land” Instead it will be "England a large housing estate which is on the outskirts of Europe". I say stop letting people in and there will be housing enough for all And no need to touch any of our precious greenbelt land My name is...
