Re: No Butterflies in Iceland

Just been to Norway North of Tromso which is above north Iceland and there were a heck of a lot of white day flying moths. One of the most common pollenators out there that I saw. Any moth would be day flying this time of year there as it's 24h daylight! Incidentally there there were several butterf...

Re: Butterflies of Var, Southern France

Hi Roger, I am intending to visit France May next year. I visited this April and stayed in the region of Gordes. I would be travelling alone, however I have a friend that lives near to Goult who I met up with a few times during my trip. He is seriously into his butterfly photography like myself and ...

Ah yes... the fact the scores are shown at the top of each page led me to beileve I was on page 1. I guess normally this thread doesn't spill over to two pages so it was the first time I encountered this...

Re: Rogues Gallery

Martin - Yes a Tigerfish though not your typical one. This is actually a very small Goliath Tigerfish. Had a 'propper' one approx 35KG throw the bait on me. Never saw the fish but got a lovely set of bite marks in the bait. Fish of a lifetime lost goddamit! Still the place was amazing for butterflie...

Re: May 2008 Votes

Like the idea of the critique on the images. You must have put quite a bit of time and effort into this. Must read the rest in detail. In response to mine: Fishiee - Pear-bordered Fritillary Sharp as a tack, beautifully exposed, but square in the centre of the frame! An interesting subject, but not ...

Re: May 2008 Votes

To some extent yes composition can win over sharpness, but a great composition badly out of focus doesn't cut it with me. A really good composition that is not quite all in focus can be great also. Equally a stunning to look at image that is a little bit soft all over can be a winner for me. Sometim...

Re: May 2008 Votes

A poor photo of a rare species should never win over a great one of something common IMO. We are meant to be judging the image not the subject. Or at least that's the way I'm voting... The standard here is really very high and seems to be getting better every month. Whereas perhaps 2-3 really stood ...

Re: May 2008 Votes

The current setup is fine IMO. I'm only fairly new but when I vote I look at the pics to see which I like the best, then scroll back through to see who the photographers are to vote for them. The results have looked pretty accurate to what IMO are the best. Certainly I see no evidence of duff photos...

Re: Butterflies of Var, Southern France

It's a bit of a way away from you, but I was in the region or Gordes/Goult in April and there were Nettle Tree Butterflies in several areas. Often when spooked they flew up into the trees so perhaps they are often missed because of this? They were quite tatty overwintered specimens generally so I di...

Re: June competition entries

Ok now things are really starting to hot up with new species popping up all over the place. First decent evening in ages and I couldn't resist making the 2 hour round trip last night to photograph these amazing Small Pearl Border Fritillaries from Mid-Sussex that I saw for the first time ever over t...

Re: Glanvilles

Masses of them at Ventnor on Saturday though a lot very worn. Must have been 50+. My first visit but they were very easy to find. Some just 50m from the childrens play area in Ventnor itself! Several Ventnor Wall lizards too which was an added bonus! I saw both these and Marsh Fritillaries in France...
