Re: Researching decline in the small tortoiseshell - help needed

Saw an absolute cracker of a small T today in Abingdon - brilliant orange - very strongly coloured. Wasn't able to get a pic though - couldn't get into a good enough position. Also saw Small T in April just east of Exeter. Have seen Small T on and off, in small numbers thoughout this summer in South...

Re: Binoculars for butterflies

No need to spend more than £50 I use these and think they are great - they focus down to about 5-6 ft and give a nice clear image. Also, you can pick'em up for less than £20. Praktica CN10X21. http://www.buzzoptics.com/acatalog/Praktica_CN10x21_Micro_Porro_Prism_Binoculars.html Save the money for th...

Re: Large Tort in Dorset

Hi Paul - sure they weren't Small Tortoiseshell?
Definately Large.
They actually had pics of them on the kits they came in...and the teacher said they were Large, and what teacher says is always right ! :)

Re: Large Tort in Dorset

There's a company that provides Large Tortoiseshells to schools for science projects (watching them grow from caterpillars).

My lad had some in his nursary class (he's 5).

Maybe with all the schools breaking up recently, this could be where the LT are coming from ?

Just a thought.

Can someone help me with these blues please.

I find them terribly difficult to tell apart. I think they are mostly just common, but there may be a Holly and I think a couple are certainly ChalkHill. Some confirmation from the experts would be nice. They are all from the south Oxfordshire area. In no particular order and apologies if some are t...

Re: Another moth I think...

Thanks.

I do try to find these things out myself, but I find it very difficult to find what I'm after on the UKMoths website.

Re: Someone put me out of my misery...

That's great. Confirmed as Common Heath...I'll make a note.

Cheers :) hjalava and Sussex Skipper

That Latticed Heath pic came from the 'Day Flying Moths' site linked from the British Butterflies website btw.

You'd best let them know they have it mis-identified.

Re: Someone put me out of my misery...

Dave That's kinda where I got to, but neither seem to look exactly like my one. I thought the trim/border going balck-white-black was very distinctive but got no further than yourself in finding something like it. Am I asking too much to get an exact match or do moths really vary that much ? cheers

Someone put me out of my misery...

When I was chasing it, I thought it would be a Skipper or maybe a Frit. But when I looked at the pics when I stuck'em on the computer, I could'nt find it anywhere. Is it a moth ? Re: GreenVeined white...but which one ?

Ah, right.

I see.

Didn't realise it was that simple.

Thought it might have been by how they look - this one looks different to the others I have.

I guess that's down to picture quality/exposure etc.

Thanks.

GreenVeined white...but which one ?

I didn't realise there were several subspecies.
I couldn't get very close so it isn't a very good picture I'm afraid.

Re: Question about cocoons at my lads' school

Yes, I meant chrysalis/pupa.

I'm not really up on all that kinda stuff.

I shall recommend that they are re-attached.

I was told they are going to be Tortoiseshells....not sure wether large or small though.

cheers
