Someone put me out of my misery...

Post by PaulJBN »

When I was chasing it, I thought it would be a Skipper or maybe a Frit.

But when I looked at the pics when I stuck'em on the computer, I could'nt find it anywhere.

Is it a moth ?

Dave

That's kinda where I got to, but neither seem to look exactly like my one.

I thought the trim/border going balck-white-black was very distinctive but got no further than yourself in finding something like it.

Am I asking too much to get an exact match or do moths really vary that much ?

cheers

Hi Paul,
It looks like a male Common Heath (Ematurga atomaria) to me.

Yes, that's pretty damn close.

In the mean time I cam up with this as a possibility:

...and that's not a latticed heath but a common heath female (Ematurga atomaria). The first one is positively E. atomaria male.

That's great. Confirmed as Common Heath...I'll make a note.

Cheers :) hjalava and Sussex Skipper

That Latticed Heath pic came from the 'Day Flying Moths' site linked from the British Butterflies website btw.

You'd best let them know they have it mis-identified.
