Question about cocoons at my lads' school

As part of a nature project in my boys class, they have had delivered in the post, some caterpillars. They come with their own tub of food and they stay in the tub until they turn into cocoons. They are supposed to cling to the specially designed tub lid while in their cocoon form. Now only one of t...

Re: Butterfly Poems

Apologies for going 'off topic' somewhat, but I love the WWI poets and that poem of Rogerdodge struck me as scannning just like "Rendezvous" by Alan Seeger. I guess lots of poems scan similarly - certainly most of Siegfried Sassoon's stuff does. Here's Rendezvous. I have a rendezvous with ...

Accusations of 'prowling'.

Just thought I would share this with you. I thought it was funny and worrying at the same time... I went with my wife and 2 kids to a local park and left them playing on the climbing frame to go for a little wander, looking for butterflies (there were some peacocks and speckled woods). Now I don't (...

Re: MeadowBrown/Gatekeeper or Small Heath ?

I thought perhaps one of the two dots of the Gatekeeper might have been obscured by the wing underside in this shot - hence my question. I also thought the very distinct change in shades along the band on the underside wing, looked a bit like that on the Small heath. Looking at the underside wing, I...

Re: What is your favourite butterfly

Well, I'm new to this but I'd have to say, so far, it's gotta be the Speckled Wood.

They are real handsome and best of all, they let me get reeeeeal close with my rubbish compact digi camera - like 2 or 3 inches away.

SpeckledWood question

Hello, I am a novice at this butterfly thing, so have a question... I took pics of loads of speckled woods last year (my first summers hunting) and they all looked the same - identical...like this one... http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f254/circumzenithalarc/speckledwoodTW2web.jpg I took a pic of ...

Wow, thanks.

I would not have recognised it as such from my book, but now that you have given me the name, I can see where you are coming from.

Stroll on next summer - and a new camera !

Introduction plus an ID request.

Hello all. I am a total novice at this butterfly malarky, just got the 'bug' for it this last summer. Not sure why, but there you go - I'm hooked. I don't have a proper camera as yet, just a little compat digital - so I have to get REALLY close to the sublect - like a couple of inches ! to get a hal...
