Re: January 2023
Not a butterfly, and nowhere near in focus, but this thing landed in front of me and was gone in the space of 5 seconds !

Re: Back Of The Net
One from yesterday.
Pretty certain this is a Larch Ladbird. I see they're common but I don't think I've spotted one before.
This one was on the inside rather than outside.

Re: Back Of The Net
The first spider looks like an orb spider, however it's an adult male (as the swollen pedipalps indicate) and most images tend to show the larger and more obvious females. Orb spider's can be rather variable in colour too, which doesn't help getting a more accurate ID either! Thanks Bugboy, you've ...

Re: Annual 2022 Competition
As someone who often finds himself with the wrong side of his point-n-click facing the intended subject, I have to just stand back in awe at the quality of photos on show here. Dave, I reckon that's your once in a lifetime shot .... but please try and prove me wrong ! In my mind's eye I can see that...

Re: Back Of The Net
Thanks Dave...I was thinking the same ! Actually the first spider (D) was making itself even more visible if anything, as it was so orange. If the sun is out, I walk along the side of the netting and look down it obliquely for any potential lumps. Most are bits of mud etc. but I'm getting quite good...

Re: Back Of The Net
I'll add another - taken yesterday.
Assume a crab spider of some description.

Back Of The Net
Well, strictly speaking, front of the net... Adult butterflies and macro moths are at a premium, but if I'm lucky the green nylon netting at the sides of some greenhouses can still attract a few small insects if the sun is out at lunchtime. I took the attached over the last couple of weeks. It's ver...

Re: Another Moth ID
Cheers both, really appreciate the feedback as always. Especially when there's a positive ID :-) Absolutely spot-on Bugboy. The photo on Naturespot is virtually identical ! We have woodland on the northern flank of the nursery (where the Noctule bat appeared from a few weeks back) and we're close to...

Another Moth ID
Hi, This one seen today at work. We flushed it from some grass when working outside and it initially landed on my leg before deciding it was safer on the green netting, where it stayed all day in the same spot. Looked very white in flight. Long and thin when landed. Body a bit longer than the Crimso...

Re: November 2022
I de-snared a Red Admiral from an old cobweb today. Hopefully it won't find another. Also, a moth was attracted to my torchlight as I walked home along a very lonely, very muddy woodland path. It was a lovely little thing, about the size of a Purple Hairstreak. It held its wings closed in quite an u...

Re: November 2022
Thanks Allan. I thought it must be but always good to get confirmed.
It looks quite plain from a distance but close up it has some very warm "Wryneck throat" colours in there.
Glad to see lunchtime sarnie eating works for you too re. occasional fly-by sightings !

Re: November 2022
Agree a Pearly Underwing-presumably a recent migrant arrival. Thanks as always for the confirmation, aeshna. No butterflies (nor Common Darter) today, but I did see both a macro and (very) micro moth sunning themselves on the green side netting. Pretty certain the former is the Sprawler. Not sure a...

Re: November 2022
No butterflies spotted today (very wet and quite cold here), but we did find this moth in a pot of mini cyclamen.
I'm going to call it as a Pearly Underwing.
As always, very happy to be corrected !

Re: November 2022
Despite being very mild and quite sunny in parts today, I didn't see any butterflies. I did see one Rusty-dot Pearl moth and, at lunchtime, a male Common Darter dragonfly and what I think must be a Noctule bat. The latter flew from the direction of a small wood and was so large that I took it to be...

Re: November 2022
Single Red Admiral resting inside House #5 today (it can get out the way it came in), but haven't seen another species for a while. This is the view inside House #1. It will soon start looking a lot emptier ..... Only supervisors are allowed to pack the poinsettias. Like Nigel Tufnel's Fender Bass V...

Re: October 2022
Cheers Allan, I have a bit of a lunchtime routine if the weather is decent. I sit outside on a pile of breeze blocks, normally finishing my lunch just after 13:15, which gives me 30 minutes to see what's about. If I can't see much outside, I'll walk round the corner and have a look inside houses #4 ...

Re: October 2022
Hi Dave,
Your moth is a Rush Veneer.
As usual, your local patch still delivers late into the season. I haven't seen a Holly Blue for about 2 months !
I did have a single male Brimstone and Red Admiral in the garden today though.

Re: October 2022
That's great to know Aeshna, thanks - I'll certainly keep 'em peeled for any other rare migrants ! I assume the Silver-y is a fresh migrant too, albeit much more common. In the houses themselves I'm seeing good numbers of Rusty-dot Pearl and lots of Diamond-back. I did see a Rush Veneer too a couple...

Re: October 2022
Two Red Admirals and a Peacock at work today.
Moth-wise a fresh-looking Silver-y and what I'm thinking must be a flighty Crimson Speckled. This was initially outside but I saw it nip into House #4 where I luckily found it again. Only managed one snap before it was off out again.
