Re: Pauline

Lots of lovely photos Pauline. I particularly like the one of the Green Hairstreak which is neatly sat in the bowl of a leaf. Or is it a Green Hairstreak hammock? I think I will stick with bowl. Fond of the Grizzled Skipper as I am, a bit  of the photos on your finger. I always enjoy lookin...

Re: Small Tortoiseshell ab

Thanks Bugboy.

It sort of conveys it in the photo, but to the naked eye, those black lines at the top of the forewings are like a very crude couple of swipes of a black marker pen.

Re: April 2022

Wow ! 389 ! Yes, a quite 'respectable' total. Wonderful to read that this lovely butterfly is thriving there.

Re: Wood White Sites

There are millions in Grafton Wood, millions of them.

I am sure the Cinderford site is just as good, if not better.

I noticed the other day on Twitter that Wood White are already out in Grafton Wood.

Re: Small Tortoiseshell ab

Thank you folks. I am still out there with my L plates on but I am quite adept now at identifying the 42 species I have met so far, in flight and at rest, and the months that they will be encountered. When I saw this fluttering about nearby I did say to myself 'What on earth is that?' I guessed at a...

Re: April 2022

I had a good day at Llanymynech Rocks on Sunday. Not as many butterflies as I expected to see volume wise (47), but my first Grizzled Skipper, Small Copper and Small Heath seen for 2022.

Re: Pauline

Thank you for my learning of the day Pauline. I have banked that new knowledge. The speed at which they emerge took me by surprise as I had no idea it was that quick. I would have guessed at 20 to 30 minutes.

Re: Pauline

Great photo sequence Pauline, thank you for sharing. For my learning: 1) How long does the butterfly take to emerge? 2) Once emerged, how long does it take before a butterfly can start flying? Apologies in advance if it varies by species, habitat, weather, month of the year and other variables that ...

Re: April 2022

I first saw the name Map butterfly a few weeks ago in passing Deborah and didn't look at any pictures. Thank you for introducing me to it with your photo. What a fascinating looking butterfly it is. Very striking. I did a bit of reading and saw this: 'The Map was unofficially introduced to the UK in...

Re: millerd

Excellent set of photos and an entertaining narrative Dave. Not remotely jealous of your circa 150 butterflies seen on that one day. I am perfectly happy with my 30-35. I was interested in your comment 'I've found that given the right conditions you can get almost any butterfly to sit on a...

Fantastic Orange Tip photos Trevor. I really struggle getting photos of this species. They are always on the move in my part of the world, the males especially so, presumably looking for females.

Re: Neil Freeman

More fantastic photos Neil. I always like looking at Grizzled Skipper photos but that Small Copper stole the show. How incredibly pristine it is, definitely fresh out of the box. The colouring is so sharp and vibrant.

Re: April 2022

34 butterflies for me today. Full sunshine for most of the day but very windy. 8 Speckled Wood, 5 Orange Tip, 5 Holly Blue, 4 Small Tortoiseshell, 3 Brimstone, 3 Large White, 2 Peacock, 2 Green Veined White, 1 Small White and 1 Red Admiral. The Red Admiral took me by surprise. The first one that I s...

Re: Neil Freeman

Lovely photos Neil and an enjoyable narrative to read. I really like those Grizzled Skipper photos. Such a cute butterfly. Interesting green hat news too. I have often wondered if there might be clothing that I could wear that would attract butterflies - and not a million and one other unwelcome ins...

Re: April 2022

Thank you Dave. More learning for me in the bank. The story as to what has happened is rather sad. However, as you wrote, it was flying when I first saw it so maybe it will go on to live its life as normal.

I particularly like that second shot Ernie, the pale blue of the butterfly, the contrast of the dark blue of the bluebell and the nice green backdrop.

Re: April 2022

Grateful as ever for the butterfly upskilling that you always provide me with. I saw a Holly Blue flying about and I followed it. It was seemingly trying to find somewhere to hide away. I got up close to it and it was oblivious to my presence. As you can see, its wings are very crumpled. Is that the...
