Re: Trevor

The Common Blue photo is brilliant Trevor but that Grizzled Skipper photo is absolutely awesome. I would be dining out on that photo all year if I had taken it.

Re: Pauline

I hope that Magnet is still on the mend Pauline. Being a part of the family, pets can be such a worry. Humans can tell you exactly how they are feeling and I have always felt so helpless at times with pets because of the communication barrier. Animals are so stoic in their ill health too. May I ask ...

Re: May 2023

Thank you for your kind words ZZW / Neil. It is actually awful for butterflies in my corner of South Derbyshire. Really bad. When one has it bad to begin with. and then one finds oneself more than 50% down on the preceding year, it is really bad. Maybe that is what the aforementioned helicopter was ...

Re: David M

My one and only trip to Rodborough Common was very similar David. A forecast of sunshine saw me sat in the car park with torrential rain beating down on the roof of the car. I spent the time composing an email to the BBC in my head asking if their weather forecasting people underwent annual appraisa...

Re: May 2023

Thank you ZZW. I had a rather torrid time in my life with all manner of tragedies and challenges thrown at me. I often think of your user name when I am out in the field and I do the zig zag wandering. It is such a brilliant and apt way to describe what we do. I wonder what others must think when th...

Some wonderful photos Guy. The Powershot SX70 HS is evidently a fantastic camera. Such clarity and colour with every photo. This might be one for my shopping list.

Re: May 2023

Fantastic cluster of photos ZZW. That is interesting to see the badger out in broad daylight. The Broad Bodied Chaser is a bit creepy looking close up, like some Dr Who creation of the Tom Baker era.

An enjoyable narrative (did quite a bit of catching up over a few pages) and wonderful photos Dave. Lots of Holly Blues ! I was particularly taken with the 'Staines Moor Small Copper'. There is something rather charming and heart warming about encountering an old stalwart in situ. One can go about o...

Re: May 2023

The Glanvilles now appearing in numbers at Hutchinsons Bank, hopefully a good year now. Here is a fresh male from yesterday.DSC05610.JPG This news had me looking to see where Hutchinson's Bank was and then wondering whether I fancied the drive there and back. A Glanville is on my list of butterflie...

Re: Neil Freeman

Excellent narrative and photos Neil. I was there yesterday and unsurprisingly your account of your day was not too dissimilar to my own. I didn't see any Green Hairstreak mind you. I also saw the many species of moth that you were able to identify - the difference being I didn't identify them. One d...

Absolutely awesome photos Pauline. It is like a quality episode of Sprinmgwatch opening up your thread. I have only read the last 2 pages having been away from the forum for quite a while and my eyes are as big as saucers looking on in wonder at all that I have seen. I was thinking about setting up ...

Re: Brown/Northern Brown Argus

The white spot (when there is one) always seems to have a black centre in Brown Argus, whereas in NBA it is clear white. Dave The first thread that I click on after an absence from the forum for far too long (extenuating circumstances) gives me some learning. Cheers Dave. The next challenge I have ...

Superb ! A 'Lifer' for me. Thank you for the butterfly intelligence SG. A week of sunshine ahead, a week of annual leave and reunited with my sickly car presents opportunities for me.

That looks like the rare Voodoo Mask moth Pauline. What a fascinating looking character that is. I love the way lepidoptera have their anti-predator appearances when at rest.
