Re: Benjamin

Yes Trevor - stinging nettles are booming right now, when I guess they might have started to struggle in a particularly hot/dry year. They did, however, struggle badly throughout the dry April, with growth stunted and leaves curled to retain moisture for several weeks. A few wet weeks later and they...

Re: Pauline

Some lovely moths there Pauline! I too am battling with identifying everything 2 or 3 times a week at the moment. Each year I seem to forget more than I learn - a few stick, but not as many as I’d hoped! I find Google lens is pretty good - certainly gets close enough to give you just a few options t...

Re: Pauline

You can never have too many images of a butterfly that beautiful Pauline, and although it’s probably impossible to do her justice, I think your photos are brilliant! Also really enjoying your updates on immature stages as ever.

What a beautiful shot Katrina - so hard to capture a scene like that so perfectly!

And that female adonis is indeed a stunner - must’ve been a lovely trip.

Re: David M

You’ve really clicked through the gears recently David, some special species and great reporting. That couple of hours by the lake with wood whites sounds magical.

Re: Max Anderson

Great stuff Max - if you had more time you could really learn a lot about the site with this method. A couple of years ago I managed to find some eggs and was lucky enough to follow one all the way, but it took a massive amount of time and although interesting, didn’t really teach me anything I didn...

Re: Benjamin

Will get back to the iris cats soon - now the ST collecting, rearing, marking, releasing marathon is coming to an end. Peacocks are ready for collection though 😬

Re: Benjamin

Thought I’d interrupt my scintillating commentary on caterpillar losses to post here something I put up on the Sussex BC page: “Just a request for people to report any marked (topside elongated black mark, underside colourful dot) small tortoiseshells that they might encounter. I’ve been having anot...

Some really lovely shots recently Pauline, I particularly like the Small Heath amongst the dead vegetation and that beautiful Ermine Moth.

Beautiful variety in those Marsh Frits Trevor! Think I’m going to miss them again this year so really is nice to see them popping up in the PDs.

A frustrating day running from clouds David! Glad to see you track down your target species at least though. Looking forward to seeing your results with the now vastly improved weather......

Indeed Trevor - even in a poor year you can get lucky - fingers crossed! Just squeezed in a visit to confirm that both X1 and Tiny Montgomery are now L5 - both yesterday (29th) I assume. Re: Benjamin

They will certainly speed up now David, and yes, a smooth run with sensible weather would certainly be best for development - although to be honest, they seem pretty well capable of dealing with whatever comes their way. Anything too challenging and they just delay development and wait it out. Quite...

Re: Max Anderson

Ben - I'd be keen to see how effective this would be for purple emperor cats. May take a little bit of the sting out of searching during the colder months.. Unfortunately I’m told that PE larvae do not fluoresce under UV, but I will certainly double check. I’m mainly looking forward to WLH surveys ...

Superb Max - I nearly bought one after reading Guy’s diary, but for some reason didn’t. Having now seen your results my order is placed - I want to go WLH counting at night. Great stuff.

What’s this - he’s gone to get the stepladder - perhaps he’s going to do some jobs around the house......oh ffs!

It’d be like that in my house anyway!

Beautiful shots! Time very well spent.

Always good to get to know your local coppers Dave 👍

You’re doing a great job without much to work with at the moment, but hopefully that’s all about to change......

Re: Benjamin

I appreciate your comments as always guys. Just a quick check up on the remaining cats today. It hailed, I got soaked, my fingers went numb and as I trudged around the mud with my ladder I wondered, once again, why I haven’t owned a coat for a decade. Mr Clean and Hollis Brown were MIA. I’m more hop...
