Re: Katrina

Katrina - I meant Black Hairstreak - not Brown as per my last post. I am getting a bit ahead of myself.

Re: Wing-roll behaviour of some members of the Lycaenidae family

Dave - Yep - That's just what the Silver-studded Blues do, except mainly on the heather rather than bramble because that is their preferred plant but I have also seen them do it on the ground.

Distance shots of WLH's maybe - but good distance shots David!
The ones I have seen so far this year just won't sit still.

Great stuff with the WLH's, Pauline. I wish I could get just one shot as good as many of those you posted.

Re: Hoggers

Hoggers - a question for you. Have you ever seen a Small Copper do a wing-roll? When the brood at Broxhead starts to build-up I am going to investigate but seeing as you are very acquainted with this species, maybe you have seen it. I know someone said they had seen it but I can't remember who. Plea...

Re: Wing-roll behaviour of some members of the Lycaenidae family

Dilettante. I like it that this topic is still being brainstormed because I don't think we have entirely bottomed it out. Your preening idea is great. When I first saw this activity - it was with the Silver-studded Blues, I immediately thought that because the wings sometimes parted at the apex of t...

Alice Holt Woodland: Abbots Wood Enclosure - 25th June 2018, 9.30 – 10.30 am Another purple day, today. I saw at least four, maybe six at the first crossing by the master tree. Two individuals came to the ground. DSCF7849.JPG DSCF7843.JPG Purple Emperor - male (23).jpg One had one of its fore-wings ...

Janet - I've just scanned back a little through your posts and see you came across Grayling already. I'm whacked after my trip to see the Large Blues yesterday but now I have to go out again and search for Grayling!!!

Thanks

Re: Neil Hulme

Neil I'd like to thank you for pointing up the Daneway Banks Large Blues to me (and then Janet for convincing me I should make the effort to go). In four hours there I got some great shots and met some great people yesterday. Also - crumbs. 300 Purple Emperors. Of course I am pleased you met your ta...

Meadow Browns are so common its difficult to get "interesting" pics of them but you seem to have achieved it. I love the markings on the first pic and assume the concertina-shape of the hind wings of the second are because it was super-fresh.

Cheers

Re: Hoggers

I bet there are UV patches on the wings, Hoggars. That iridescence may be a give-away. I keep meaning to buy a UV-lamp, they are cheap enough - and then chose an overcast day to shine it on them to see what happens....

Re: Wing-roll behaviour of some members of the Lycaenidae family

Today I went to Daneway Banks for the Large Blues and saw one do a wing-roll, first with wings closed and then with wings ajar.

I saw a couple of dozen individuals in total while there but only this one was doing it.

Oh, yes. I forgot to say. I saw one do a wing-roll. First with its wings closed and then with wings ajar. Fantastic. Another one to add to my list. I shall make a note as usual under "General".

Daneway Banks - 24th June 2018 Daneway Banks (4).JPG I hardly ever leave Hampshire, the county I live in, to look at butterflies. Perhaps I skip a few miles across the border into Surrey but that's about it. But I have to thank Janet and her recent post about the Large Blues for todays visit. Ever s...
