Hi Simon,

Here's a quote from my book by Jeremy Thomas:

"By and large, the Meadow Brown is a sedentary insect, which strays from its breeding sites only when these are disturbed or are of poor quality."

Hope that helps.

Organisations/Research folk logging Butterflies

Hi, Apart from the Butterfly Consevation folk, does anyone know of any other organisation or individual who requires reports on certain butterfly sightings? I found with some other insects there are a multitude of people who would like to hear of our sightings, take seven spot ladybirds and stag bee...

Clothes Moths!

Hi, I put this question to a moth forum several days ago and they still haven't answered me despite some 11 viewings! So I wondered if any of you chaps had the answer? A colleague asked me about clothes moths. I explained that out of the some 2700 moths in the UK, only 5 or 5 species are actually gu...

Hi Martin, I've been looking at your picture for a couple weeks now. I've read the whole post and I understand why people grapple with up turned lens etc (just like I am on the Backgarden Moths Forum to get my first light!) but I sooo want to say: I want to take pictures like THIS! I don't have the ...

Although on second viewing I think mine is a male mincki because of the wide pale patches on the lower wings and the black dot. The subalbida has smaller pale patches and a bigger dot.

What do you think?

Pale Gatekeeper

Hi,

This one was fluttering about my garden today. Is it common to see them like this or is it a known aberation?

Yippee - loads of yellow ragwort in and around my garden - will get looking tomorrow! I've never seen the moth, let alone it's caterpillars.

Hi! Well how strange is this????? Just this week I have made contact with the county moth reporter for Sussex and I posed him a question about a white letter hairstreak I saw a few years ago - yes he does butterflies too! I haven't read the report Pete mentions but I will. Just wanted to say though ...

Hi! If it's any help at all!, when I get home after 5pm when most butterflies have left, I often find Meadow Browns still feeding on the flowers in the shade. I don't know anything about temperatures being too hot for butterflies but in my experience, Meadow Browns do settle on flowers in the shade ...

Well as a gardener I think there are plenty of opportunities to capture wildlife on film. Sweep the leaves, clear the pond, tidy the shed, turn the compost. All these activities bring up allsorts - bugs, beetles, butterflies, moths, birds, bees etc and keep you warm whilst you're looking! Put out fa...

In connection with this, is there a link from the forum back to the site? I haven't found it yet if there is!

I think this would be very useful as I've been to the forum several times and never found the main site until I deleted all the stuff in the url after the main site's address.

Could this be a Meadow Brown?

Could this be a meadow brown with it's spot hidden or is it something completely different?
