Re: May 2020

I came across this worn Painted Lady on the East coast on Monday. To my eye, it appears much darker than normal, or is it just old age (the butterfly, not me)?

Re: Ectoparasite or foreign object

Could this be another example of a globule of meconium, this time on the abdomen of a male Adonis Blue?

Female Adonis Blue ?

Please can one the Blue experts give me their opinion of this female blue. I saw her this morning at a well known Chalkhill Blue site in Hertfordshire.

Re: May 2020

In Wurzel’s “favourite Small Copper photograph” back in January, I posted a photograph of the first mating pair i had observed in my garden and speculated that it boded well for 2020. Delighted to find these two in the garden today.

Re: European Blues

This topic has produced some superb images, reinforcing the Blues as my favourite group of butterflies. I started to make a selection but stopped when I realised what I would have to exclude. So I reinterpreted the topic to what Blues give me the most pleasure, for me one stands out, being local, nu...

Re: April 2020

Pleased to take my daily exercise with plenty of Orange Tip & Holly Blue also c. five Green Hairstreak also enjoying the sunshine. As always, the Green Hairstreak were very lively and hard to follow when disturbed but once settled, were very approachable.

Spanish Blues

The recent posts of images of Chequered Blue brought back some lovely memories and I revisited some photographs I took a few years back all taken in May in the LaRioja region of Spain. Flying with S. orion were what I think are S. panopotes and another blue that I am uncertain of. I would be gratefu...

Re: European Butterflies "Top ten of 2019" amid Coronavirus

I also agree with previous comments, the Chequered Blue photograph is very special. I used to spend many hours watching these little beauties in the LaRioja region of Northern Spain. I never saw one with its wings flat open, let alone take a photograph. It’s on my increasingly long “to do next year ...

Re: March 2020

In my now well observed garden, Brimstone, all males, most abundant/obvious, followed by Comma. The odd Peacock has been around for a while, Small Tortoiseshell (2) first seen yesterday. Small White last week. On a permitted excursion 2 days ago, my first Holly Blue. Today Is forecast to be sunny, h...

Re: White-letter Hairstreak - Favourite Photo 2019

Close to home is a relatively large Elm wood that I had not visited prior to 2019. Last June, I did and encountered plenty of White-letter Hairstreak. Although many of the trees have died, there are still plenty in good health. I have chosen this mating pair, that were sat at head height, which woul...

Re: Wall - Favourite Photo 2019

I usually see Wall at the coast where it is often windy and more often than not they are worn or damaged. Therefore, this freshly emerged individual sat on the path at Hickling Broad was a bit unusual for me and so is my favourite for 2019.

Re: Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary - Favourite Photo 2019

I have chosen two, both taken at Cudden Point in Cornwall. Although it is a bit of a hike, there is no road noise here, maybe the odd Chough and the wild flowers and sea views are a bonus. As with other sites in the South-west, there are two broods, so one from each showing the different nectar sour...

Re: Small Skipper - Favourite Photo 2019

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of planting a patch of lavender in one of the most exposed parts of my garden making photographing visitors challenging. I encountered this individual on an unusually calm day in early July and had rare success, so it is my choice of favourite.

I am pleased to say that I saw good numbers on my travels in 2019, but I have chosen this photograph of a very fresh individual from the garden at home taken on 13 August.

Re: Small Blue - Favourite Photo 2019

The Small Blue is a real favourite of mine and its apparent spread into East Anglia is great news. My usual encounters are at Totternhoe but this year I was a little early and only had a glimpse of one flying. Fortunately, fellow enthusiast Millerd, kindly offered to take me to a nearby, hopefully e...

Re: Small Copper - Favourite Photo 2019

Although I regularly see Small Copper in my garden, I have never encountered a pair mating. That is why I chose this photograph, taken on 18 September. Looking good for 2020.

Re: Silver-studded Blue - Favourite Photo of 2019

I attended the BC field trip on 23 May in Cornwall primarily looking for Grizzled Skippers, a Silver-studded Blue lava was a fantastic bonus as was what I believe to be the first record in UK of an adult Silver-studded Blue. He had only recently emerged and yet to make his first flight. Both the lav...
