Re: Pauline

Fox Moth have 5 instars i think and your latest pictures from the 4th the last instar they tend to be chestnut coloured with longer hair and less yellow rings. They tend to hibernate in September and be fully grown in August so on time.

Re: millerd

Marsh Fritillaries will eat other plants, Other Scabious Species, Plantain, HoneySuckle, Knapweed, Just as Glanvilles will eat Speedwells in the wild. Just because books say only Devils Bit, doesnt mean they dont use other foodplants in the wild. Remember Brown Argus was said to only eat Rock-Rose n...

Re: Pauline

Ive got Fox Moth larvae through the winter with one method, and the metod for a few butterfly larvae should work too. Fox moth larvae tend to get damp then get mouldy which is why they dont get through.

Re: May 2021

Not sure how self sustaining the hutchinsons bank Glannies are :? There were 23 Glanville larval webs last year, each being closely monitored and marked onsite, 22 of which were found again in January when the larvae woke up from where the hibernation webs were located, web 2 was 6 inches up a hawt...

Re: May 2021

I see Marsh Fritillary are now on the species list at Hutchinsons bank. Yet another unofficial release I assume. That place is turning into some kind of butterfly zoo. Cheers, Neil. It seems thanks to the Marsh Dumper last year, they bred on at least 2 of the sites and produced some butterflies thi...

Re: May 2021

I see Marsh Fritillary are now on the species list at Hutchinsons bank. It was dumped there last year during lockdown, along with sites like Denbies Hillside and 30+ other sites across the South East, bred in the cutting, and we were not pleased, if they introduced Cotesia bignelli to the site, as ...

The larvae become more visable in June, so you should notice them when they move to the leaves.

Re: Glanville fritillary

I think the Wrecclesham population is behind a strong fence now, people were removed from the site in 2019. I managed to see Glanvilles at several sites last year 4 in Surrey and 1 in Kent, none of these were Wrecclesham or IOW.

Again a very fresh male, hopefully they will have another good sunny flight period, numbers of larvae seemed to be higher this year.

Jason Birder, Why do you say that, in the middle of an influx of migrants, SilverYs, Painted Ladies were all seen that day, and have you ever known Large Tortoiseshell larvae or pupae to be availiable to buy and then actually delivered, Other Large Tortoiseshell sightings have been at High Elms, and...
