Fox Moth have 5 instars i think and your latest pictures from the 4th the last instar they tend to be chestnut coloured with longer hair and less yellow rings. They tend to hibernate in September and be fully grown in August so on time.

The white wing fringe is also more visible in DGFs as shown in the above pictures.

Marsh Fritillaries will eat other plants, Other Scabious Species, Plantain, HoneySuckle, Knapweed, Just as Glanvilles will eat Speedwells in the wild. Ive got Fox Moth larvae through the winter with one method, and the metod for a few butterfly larvae should work too. Fox moth larvae tend to get damp then get mouldy which is why they dont get through.

Not sure how self sustaining the hutchinsons bank Glannies are :? There were 23 Glanville larval webs last year, each being closely monitored and marked onsite, 22 of which were found again in January when the larvae woke up from where the hibernation webs were located, web 2 was 6 inches up a hawt...

I see Marsh Fritillary are now on the species list at Hutchinsons bank. It was dumped there last year during lockdown, along with sites like Denbies Hillside and 30+ other sites across the South East, bred in the cutting, and we were not pleased, if they introduced Cotesia bignelli to the site, as ...

The larvae become more visable in June, so you should notice them when they move to the leaves.

I think the Wrecclesham population is behind a strong fence now, people were removed from the site in 2019. I managed to see Glanvilles at several sites last year 4 in Surrey and 1 in Kent, none of these were Wrecclesham or IOW.

Snap, Lovely day at Hutchinsons Bank in the cutting, the first female Glanville Fritillary emerged, the photos clearly show the differences between the sexes.

Our first male emerged at Hutchinsons Bank today, probably the first UK mainland sighting this year.

The Glanville Fritillary Butterflies have finallly started to emerge at Hutchinsons Bank, the first male seen this afternoon in the Cutting, still had floppy wings.
